WASHINGTON — A cause of a fire that reportedly began on the porch of a Washington residence earlier this week is under investigation.
At 12:30 a.m. Tuesday, two Natchez Fire Department crews along with the Foster Mound Volunteer Fire Department responded to a fire at 826 U.S. 61 North.
A passing motorist spotted the blaze and alerted authorities, Adams County Fire Coordinator Darryl Smith said.
Smith said when firefighters arrived, the fire was on the front porch but spread into the attic. Smith said firefighters got the fire under control in approximately 30 minutes.
The structure, which is abandoned, is still standing, Smith said, but is going to need work due to the fire spreading into the attic. No one was injured.
Smith said he is performing the investigation, but would not say the cause of the fire.
“As far as speaking about the fire, I can’t say,” Smith said. “It is under investigation.”
Smith would not confirm or deny if arson was a possibility.
