County to spend $67K on Quitman Road bridge

NATCHEZ — Adams County supervisors on Monday agreed to spend approximately $67,000 to rebuild the Quitman Road bridge substructure.
Three bridges — on Deerfield, Hutchins Landing and Quitman roads — failed inspection and were closed in July. Adams County Road Manager Robbie Dollar said the Deerfield Road bridge has since been reopened, but Hutchins Landing and Quitman road bridges are still closed.
“I think you need to keep that bridge open,” Dollar said. “It is another way out of the bottom.”
Dollar was referring to Anna’s Bottom. During flooding, Quitman Road is the only route not under water, Adams County Board of Supervisors President Mike Lazarus said.
Dollar said while it is technically a repair, the substructure would basically be rebuilt.
The county still needs to get at least two quotes for the work. The $67,000 figure is an estimated price.
The county road crews will remove the deck of the bridge and perform some of the work, while a contractor would be required to drive the pilings.
District 2 Supervisor David Carter asked how long the bridge would likely last after the repair.
“I want to make sure it is not like Deerfield, where in four years it is shut down again,” Carter said.
County Engineer Jim Marlow said the repair would bring the substructure up to a good grade. However, Marlow said the repair is not addressing the bridge’s deck and a truck with a heavy load could in theory damage it.
Lazarus said the Deerfield Road bridge has been shut down and repaired numerous times due to not being built to handle the weight of the log trucks that often cross it.
Crews are currently constructing a $1.6 million bridge on Deerfield Road, which is expected to be completed in the next few months. Lazarus said the new bridge would be built to handle the weight of log trucks.
The bridge is a state-aid project at no cost to the county.
Until the new bridge is completed on Deerfield Road, Lazarus said road crews installed a bar to prevent truck traffic.
The Hutchins Landing Road bridge is still closed, and Lazarus said it would be until the state aid funds are received so a new bridge could be installed. The road is scheduled to be the next bridge built by state aid in the county after Deerfield.
Lazarus said a temporary repair would cost more than $200,000.
“We will wait and replace it with a new bridge,” Lazarus said. “I know it is inconvenient, but the residents can access the area from another way. We can’t spend county funds knowing it is about to be replaced.”
