Tax assessments ready for review

NATCHEZ — Starting today, Adams County residents can stop by the tax assessor’s office to view the new tax assessments before the bill comes later this year.
From July 17 to July 31, Tax Assessor Reynolds Atkins said taxpayers could drop by his office in the courthouse and look through the books and make any objections now before it is too late.
“A lot of people wait until December when they get their tax bill, and it is too late then,” Atkins said.
Atkins said if taxpayers came by during this two-week period, then they would be able to attend the Adams County Board of Supervisors’ first meeting in August, when objections are supposed to be made before the supervisors adopt a budget for the fiscal year.
Atkins said if the objection is related to an error in the assessment, the tax assessor’s office could help residents with that problem.
“We want people to understand their assessment,” Atkins said. “Unfortunately, not many people come in during those two weeks in July, but we want to see them. We will be here to help them.”
Supervisors President Mike Lazarus also said he encouraged residents to go check their assessment before it is too late.
“Once the budget is set, it is set,” Lazarus said. “We are banking on those funds coming in.
“If you go in now, there is plenty of time to file objections. Don’t wait until you get a surprise increase in the mail because it will be too late.”
