VIDALIA — Every year in mid-August, Vernon Randall Sr. and his granddaughter Tatyana come together for a joint celebration of one very special day — their birthday.
With 11 grandchildren total, Vernon, who will be 59 this Aug. 12, was bound to share the yearly festivities with at least one.
When The Dart landed Tuesday at Vernon’s residence on Alabama Street, Tatyana was tagging along to help with some yard work at her mother’s house.
“She is a good one,” Vernon said. “She helps, and she even cooks some. She’s my birthday baby.”
Vernon, known to his grandkids as “Papa,” said while keeping up with the bunch can be a challenge, he enjoys every minute of his role.
“They are the only thing really keeping us going,” he said. “The truth is there really isn’t anything different (than being a parent). They might be hardheaded, but I love them.”
As the second oldest of the 11 grandchildren, Tatyana said she likes to spend time with her grandfather because of his big heart. Her and her five siblings live in Vidalia, but Tatyana said she visits her grandparents’ house almost every day.
“We all get away with stuff,” she said. “Sometimes he fusses and can be old and grouchy, but every time we ask for something he gives it to us.”
With their birthday only a couple months away, Vernon said he is not sure how he and Tatyana will celebrate this year.
“She will be 16,” he said. “She is going to have all the young people with her this year, so I’m not sure if she wants me there.”
While he has not solidified any plans yet, Vernon said he is sure to enjoy any time spent with his grandchildren.
“All 11 of them usually live with us around Christmastime. Now, that’s a job,” he said. “It’s just fun being a grandparent. I love it.”
