Jeff Hancock is returning to Vidalia High School, but this time he won’t be a Viking.

After accepting a position as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at McMurry University in Texas this past February, Hancock will host a football camp from 1 to 4 p.m. Thursday at the school.

“It was something I wanted to do, after coaching here for three years,” the previous Vikings head coach said. “There is not a whole lot of recruiting in this area. I wanted to give back and help kids.”

The camp is for kids entering grades 9-12 and is for walk-ups only. Hancock said it will feature basic drills and position fundamentals. The cost is $20.

Hancock said shortly after stepping down at Vidalia, he knew he wanted to use his platform as a college coach to train athletes in the area.

The camp, which is presented by McMurry, is one of four during the week. Other stops include Shreveport, Monroe and Alexandria and will be led by the university’s seven-man football coaching staff.

“This is an opportunity for kids to learn from college coaches and see what that’s like. I thought it was a no-brainer,” Hancock said. “It lets them learn a different perspective. I think anytime a guy has an opportunity to perfect his craft it’s a good thing. From every camp you pick up something that will make you better.”

Hancock said since he thinks recruiting is low in the Miss-Lou, the camp also allows the McMurry staff a chance to evaluate high school athletes.

“It gives my coaches a chance to get to know those guys, too, besides just me,” he said.
