Cathedral High School softball coach Gary Blackwell is retiring from coaching after nearly two decades with the Green Wave.

Blackwell first served as the middle school girls basketball coach starting in 1998, then took over the softball program in 2002.

“I’m getting older and the summer is getting hotter,” Blackwell said. “We were able to build the program and get it running. We had a very successful program with a lot of good times and good memories.

“Without the help of (assistant coaches) Mark Fortenbery and Tommy Milligan, my coaching wouldn’t have been anything without them.”

Athletic Director Craig Beesley confirmed the retirement Tuesday and said he is thankful for the service Blackwell has provided to Cathedral students.

“He’s always been a steady coach for us with softball and basketball,” Beesley said. ”We appreciate all the work he’s put in through the years.”
