Former Trinity Episcopal star Donavan “Sky” Logan has one more year to prove his worth at the University of Texas at El Paso, and he isn’t wasting any time.
Logan came home to the Miss-Lou this summer for a little over two weeks, but has since returned to the Lone-Star State to prepare for his final campaign.
“It’s always good to come back home,” Logan said. “I’m looking forward to a big season, and I have my confidence coming back.”
The redshirt-senior defensive tackle said he is hopeful his leadership can aid the Miners to improve on last year’s record of 4-8.
The 6-foot-1, 285 pounder said he will be the only senior on the defensive line this coming season, with only a few others returning with game experience. He ended last season with 34 total tackles, 12 of them being solo. He played in 12 games, including starting in the final four contests of the year.
“I’m going to make sure my group of guys is there every day at practice and working out,” he said. “We have a lot of young guys, and I want to make sure they grow up really fast to be ready.”
While UTEP will see some new faces on the defensive front, Logan said he isn’t worried about the end result.
“I think we know the defense pretty well, and we came together during spring,” he said. “I trust my guys.”
Logan said for the Miners to have a bounce-back season, the key is for the whole team to work as one unit.
“We struggled last year playing together,” he said. “When the offense was clicking, the defense wasn’t there. And when the defense was clicking, the offense wasn’t. We just weren’t focused. When bad times come, we have to learn to play as a team trying to get a win every week.”
Even after his senior season, Logan hopes to continue helping out his teammates.
Since graduating from UTEP in May with a degree in multidisciplinary studies, Logan said he will now pursue his master’s in leadership studies in hopes of getting a position as a graduate assistant to coach football at UTEP.
“My program gives a good chance of becoming a GA. It’s like a step-by-step plan,” he said. “I want to coach, and I’m really excited taking the opportunity to coach at where I graduated.”
Before his college career is over, however, Logan has one goal.
“I’m just looking forward to getting to a bowl game,” he said. “I haven’t been to one since my freshman year at Hinds (Community College). Hopefully we make it there.”
