NATCHEZ — A man turned himself in Friday after shooting and killing a stray German shepard in his neighbor’s yard.
Michael Ray Campbell, 46, 216 Spokane Road, was arrested at 4 p.m. Friday on charges of killing of an animal.
Natchez-Adams County Humane Society Vice President Nan Garrison said Campbell’s neighbors were apparently friendly to the stray dog that often roamed the neighborhood.
The dog was reportedly on the other side of Campbell’s fence when Campbell used a .22-caliber rifle to shoot the dog, Maj. Ricky Stevens said.
Campbell was released from the county jail Friday on a $2,000 bond.
Mayfield said the sheriff’s office often uses the help of the humane society to investigate charges of animal cruelty and sign affidavits.
“We’re lucky to have Garrison, because she an attorney and also a big advocate for animals and pets,” Mayfield said.
The sheriff’s office is partnering with the humane society May 3 to teach free course to law enforcement officials, humane society investigators and prosecutors and judges focusing on issues related to investigating animal cruelty and animal fighting.
