Cathedral High School’s Greg Moore dashed around the left end, spun off a tackle and kept himself upright by pounding his fist into the ground before backpedalling into the end zone.
Football was in in full force Thursday night at Cathedral.
Moore’s dazzling touchdown run was just one of a slew of highlights as the Green Wave conducted an intrasquad scrimmage to wrap up its spring, with the Green Team defeating the White Team, 42-35.
Second-year CHS coach Chuck Darbonne said he was pleased with the way his team competed throughout its 10 spring sessions and remains excited about its progress.
“Kids were doing what they were supposed to do,” he said. “It’s not a thinking process like it was last year when I got here at this time. They’re actually playing through it.”
Moore scored on scoring runs of 1, 5, 5 and his highlight-reel 30-yarder. While the rising senior provided the lightning, Moore’s younger brother, Bryson Moore, provided the thunder. The younger Moore scored on runs of 10 yards and a bruising 60 yarder.
“They have really progressed as football players since the day that I got here,” Darbonne said.
Darbonne also said he liked the play of a third runner, Owen Thibodeaux, who figures to play a key role this fall for the Green Wave. Thibodeaux tallied a 40-yard dash up the middle before plunging into the end zone from 5 yards out early on Thursday.
“He’s working himself into the mix on offense and defense and becoming one of the guys we’re going to lean on,” Darbonne said.
Ben Foster played quarterback for both teams and threw touchdown passes of 5, 8, 20, 50 and 60 yards. Foster started a number of games for Cathedral last season after stepping in for an injured Connor Mire.
“Ben has done a great job all spring,” Darbonne said. “He’s progressed from last year and he’s grown up. He got thrown into the fire a little early, but he learned on the fly.”
Darbonne said his biggest takeaway this spring has been the way his team has supported each other throughout.
“We have a lot of unity. There is a lot of positive reinforcement from the players,” he said. “Whenever someone would mess something up, there wasn’t anything negative. There was a lot of, ‘Hey, you’re going to get it the next time.’ And I think we need that.”
Darbonne said the newfound support was evident throughout Thursday, and perhaps best exemplified in two separate plays from wide receiver Brye Edwards.
The wide out dropped what potentially would have been a long-gainer on one possession, only to come back the next to haul in a 60-yard touchdown.
“He came back and made a tougher catch,” Darbonne said. “People came up to him and said, ‘You’re going to get this the next time.’”
Ben White and Caden Poole also hauled in long touchdown passes during Thursday’s action.
