Seventeenth seed Monterey held its own against No. 1 seed Holden, but the Lady Rockets secured a 9-5 win over the Lady Wolves Friday afternoon in the regional round of the Class B Playoffs.

Holden took the lead for good with a seven-run rally in the bottom of the third for a 9-2 advantage. But Monterey would not go away quietly.

“It went back and forth. (It was) a good ball game,” Lady Wolves head coach Cary Shivley said. “They got up 2-0 and our kids battled back. They had a big inning, but we never quit trying.”

The Lady Wolves scored one run in the top of the fifth and added two more runs in the top of the seventh, but it would not be enough.

“I thought we executed our game plan. We put the ball in play and made them play,” Shivley said. “I’m proud of my kids. They played hard.”

Andy Gray and Molly Gray each went 2-for-4 and Allie Lipsey had a double.

Monterey finished its season at 12-14 overall.
