The gathering around Delta Charter School’s pitching circle Tuesday was all but the normal after-game conversation from softball coach Jeannie Beach. Instead, Beach called her team together to celebrate a game that will go down in the books as the first postseason victory in program history.

The seventh-ranked Lady Storm (16-7) joined in unison for a quick dance after taking down No. 26 Plain Dealing in the first round of LHSAA Class 1A playoffs, 17-0 in three innings.

“After you take care of business, it’s not all about being serious all the time,” Beach said. “You have to remind them sometimes that we are still young at heart. We are just making memories.”

The Lady Storm began strong with Jania Burns pitching three strikeouts in the first inning. Haley Sharp then came in to follow the senior starter for the final two frames.

Sharp struck out six batters of her own to keep the Lady Storm perfect on defense.

Sharp said after the win, the love for her teammates was the first thing on her mind.

“They really are like my sisters,” she said. “We play for everybody, and I didn’t want this to end for the seniors because they are my best friends.”

Delta Charter will continue its playoff run as it hosts a second round matchup against district rival No. 10 Beekman Charter either Thursday or Friday.

Beach said moving forward, the use of a second arm could come in handy.

“We aren’t always given the opportunity to use a different pitcher, but today we were,” Beach said. “(Sharp) works hard at everything she does. She was hitting the spot, and that’s good because we may need her down the road, you never know.”

Beach also said Delta Charter’s two regular season wins over Beekman Charter could be a great boost.

The Lady Storm defeated BCS in March, 8-3 and in April, 7-1.

“I think it’s good to play someone you’ve already beat twice,” Beach said. “We can walk in with a little bit of confidence but hopefully not too much.”

DCS also started early on offense, taking a 15-0 lead after one inning.

Delta Charter combined for 10 hits, including two each from Shelbi McManus, Shauneshia Crumpton and Kaitlyn Dooley.

“I’m just excited for them to win their first playoff game,” Beach said.
