ATLANTA, Texas — Graveside services for David E. Carter, 88, of Atlanta, Texas, who died Sunday, April 16, 2017, at his residence surrounded by his family, will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Carter Cemetery in Wilkinson County under the direction of Hanner Funeral Service in Atlanta, Texas.  
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Mr. Carter was born Dec. 8, 1928, in Woodville, the son of Archer and Mattie Carter.
He was retired from International Paper Company and was a member of First Baptist Church in Atlanta. He loved spending time with family and hunting and fishing.
Mr. Carter was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Donetta Carter; and two brothers, Edward Carter and Jesse Carter.
Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Ruth R. Carter; four daughters, Sandra Berry and husband, Duke, of Rock Springs, Wyo., Beth Hogan and husband, Tim, of Atlanta, Annette O’Day and husband, Rob, of Stafford, Va., and Ruth Ellen Nugent and husband, Matthew, of Atlanta; eight grandchildren, Erika Berry, Clint Crowder, Colt Berry, Halley Knuth, Carter Hogan, Olivia O’Day, Zach Nugent and Ellis O’Day; eight great-grandchildren; and a number of other relatives.
