MONTEREY — A Ferriday man was arrested Wednesday after allegedly making unwanted sexual advances to a 16-year-old girl and then using a racial slur when she refused him.

Following the alleged sexual battery, the Ferriday man also reportedly incited an attack against a black man in Monterey.

John Austin Evans, 18, 3219 Dunbarton Road, Ferriday, was charged with sexual battery and simple battery.

Concordia Parish Sheriff’s Office juvenile investigator Sgt. Lee Ford said the incident occurred at a party following the Monterey High School prom Saturday.

Evans, who is no longer in high school, and the juvenile victim were in the back seat of a truck with multiple people. The truck was en route to another party at approximately 2 a.m. to 3 a.m. Sunday in Monterey, Ford said.

During the ride, Evans allegedly attempted sexual advances on the victim, who is mixed race, Ford said. When the victim reportedly denied Evans, he allegedly called her a racial slur and insinuated he could do what he wanted, Ford said.

During the struggle, Ford said Evans allegedly bit her on the lip and choked and slapped her. Ford said Evans allegedly touched the victim inappropriately and tried to force her to reciprocate.

Once the group got out of the truck at the party, Ford said Evans allegedly accused a black man at the party of raping a white girl, which reportedly caused a mob to attack the black man.

Ford said the 18-year-old black man, who is from St. Francisville and was visiting the area with a friend, was able to escape with someone at the party who got him to safety.

Alcohol was involved at the parties, Ford said.

Ford said multiple witness statements led to the arrest of Evans. Ford said he could only release limited information on the attack of the black man as more arrests are pending.

Ford said the female victim was treated and released from Riverland Medical Center. The male victim was treated and released from a hospital in the St. Francisville area, Ford said.

“I will leave no stone unturned,” Ford said. “I think it is sad that at this time, 2017, we are still dealing with this foolishness. It is horrible.”

Concordia Parish Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy David Hedrick said none of the events were school sponsored. Hedrick said his deputies are working hard on this case.

“My deputies and investigators are doing an excellent job,” Hedrick said. “It does appear that the incident could have been race-related. We are investigating every aspect of this case, ensuring that we have the correct people arrested.

“This was a very unfortunate incident. Everyone please remember the family in your prayers.”

Evans was in jail Thursday evening on a $25,750 bond.
