D’Asia Mitchell and Jasmine Ivory were all smiles Wednesday morning inside the Trinity Episcopal gym.

In front of family, coaches, friends and classmates, the dynamic Trinity basketball duo signed college scholarships, with Mitchell inking with Jackson State and Ivory with Hinds Community College.

“This is very exciting,” Mitchell said. “I’m very appreciative of this opportunity that I’ve been able to achieve. This is just a real blessing.”

Wednesday’s signings cap off what was a strong senior campaign for the Lady Saints tandem. Trinity won its district championship for a third straight year and advanced to the MAIS AA semifinals.

“I told them that last night I cried a little bit thinking about them leaving,” Trinity coach Fay Minor said. “I thought about how much we’ve been through. But this is such a big accomplishment, because I don’t think this school has ever had two females sign in one day. So this is awesome.”

Mitchell, who averaged 24 points and nine rebounds this past season, said she chose JSU over interest from Alcorn State, Hinds and others.

“It’s great to be a Lady Tiger,” she said. “It’s great to be able to got a Division I school. I enjoy the atmosphere (at JSU), and they’re a real close family.”

Ivory, who averaged 15 points per contest, said she chose Hinds over interest from Mississippi College and other statewide community colleges.

“I’ve been waiting on this for a very long time,” she said. “I’ve worked very hard for this.”

The smooth shooting guard said a major factor in her decision was the chance to play with close friend and fellow signee in Natchez High’s Kirdis Clark.

“When I went there, I liked it a lot,” Ivory said. “I just liked the school. I’d rather go to (junior college), get the feeling of (college basketball) and develop, and then I’ll go from there.”

Minor said both colleges are excited about the prospects they are bringing in.

“They like what they’re getting,” she said. “The Hinds coach (Tomekia Reed) calls me three or four times a week to talk about Jasmine and her talents. The Jackson State (Surina R. Dixon) coach is just beside herself about D’Asia. They’ve both been going up and meeting their teammates.”

Ivory said while she is looking forward to what college potentially holds, she will always treasure her time spent on and off the court with Mitchell.

“It’s kind of heartbreaking,” she said. “We’re only going to be 25 minutes apart. There’s probably going to be a lot of road trips.”
