Former Trinity Episcopal star Jake Winston is one step closer to the Major Leagues.
The Vidalia natvie has been assigned to the Reno Aces, the Class-AAA affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Winston caught up with Reno on its road swing at Fresno Sunday.
“When I got the call, I didn’t hardly sleep that night from excitement,” he said. “It’s an awesome feeling being around these guys who have been around and know a lot about the game. It’s nice to pick their brains.”
The right-handed hurler had been in Scottsdale, Ariz., at the Diamondbacks sprint training facility awaiting to be assigned to a club.
Reno (2-3) plays in the Pacific Coast League, and completed a five-game road trip Monday at Fresno with a 5-2 win.
The Aces return home for a seven-game home stand, starting today with a four-game series against the Albuquerque Isotopes.
Last year for the Hillsboro Hops, Arizona’s Class-A affiliate, Winston compiled a 2.87 earned-run average to go along with 31 strikeouts in 31.1 innings pitched.
