Plenty of good news from schools

Students, teachers and school administrators across the Miss-Lou excelled last week on the field, in the classroom and in the community. Here is a look at some of their achievements:

  • McLaurin Elementary School has two reasons to celebrate this year. The school’s principal and one of its teachers received high honors from the Natchez-Adams School District. McLaurin principal Brittaney Cheatham received the NASD Administrator of the Year award. Third-grade teacher April Wallis was awarded the district’s Teacher of the Year award. Congratulations to this year’s recipients.
  • A group of Olympians competed on the Vidalia High School football field as the Concordia Parish School District hosted the Special Olympics Friday. For the volunteers and athletes the smiles were the biggest award of the day. Children with disabilities found success, joy and friendship during the various races and competitions. Thanks to all who made this important event happen.
  • Three local students won recognition in the annual Mississippi Daughters of the American Revolution essay contest. Congratulations to Wilkinson County seventh-grader Andrew Session for winning first place, Cathedral eighth-grader Ashley Coleman for winning second place and Cathedral fifth-grader Margaret Waddill for winning third place in their respective grade levels. Congratulations to the students for their achievements.
  • Four-year-old Cathedral Elementary student Vivian Jones got her wish recently when the Make-A-Wish Foundation provided Vivian and her mother, Olivia, with a trip to Walt Disney World. With cystic fibrosis, Vivian’s days are spent getting daily breathing treatments and wearing a machine that pats her chest to break up the mucus that forms in her lungs as a result of the disease. The trip provides many happy memories and a momentary break from the complications caused by the disease.

Remember to thank those who continue to make our community great.
