Delta Charter School football coach Zach Rogel is leaving the school after just one year heading up the program.

Rogel said Wednesday he is leaving for family reasons and to pursue other things outside of football.

“It is very difficult to move on,” he said. “This is a great school and a great group of kids.”

Delta Charter School Principal Buddy Givens said he does not anticipate Rogel to stay at the school for the remainder of the year, yet should remain at the school for another couple of weeks.

“He did great things for our program,” Givens said. “He had a tremendous passion for the game and for the kids. We are sad to see him go.”

Rogel came to Delta Charter last spring after a two-year stint as head football coach of Trinity Episcopal.

Rogel led the Storm to a 4-9 record last season, guiding the storm to also winning their first playoff game in school history. Delta Charter fell to Kentwood in the second round of the LHSAA Class 1A playoffs.

Rogel and Givens held a meeting with the football team Wednesday, informing the players of Rogel’s departure.

“I told them I will always be there for them,” Rogel said. “It’s been a great time.”

Givens said Delta Charter was already looking to expand its football staff for next season, so the search for a new head coach will not start from scratch.

“We had already begun posting and reaching out to people,” Givens said. “We do have an ongoing process. It does take a while, but we will pick up and keep going.”

Givens said while Rogel had a memorable impact on the Storm, the school must move on.

“We are going to approach this as a positive opportunity,” he said.
