NATCHEZ — At 17, Jakierra Hunt already knows she wants to serve her country.

For the early Natchez High School graduate, the military is a step in her plan to become a nurse and travel the world.

When The Dart landed on Maple Street Saturday, it found Hunt relaxing on the porch of her grandmother’s house.

Most of her family lives in Natchez, Hunt said, but she has aspirations to leave Natchez and eventually live in New York City.

For Hunt, joining the military and leaving her hometown means a chance to fully realize her potential.

She has traveled to Florida and Texas, but said she is excited to see other parts of the world.

“I want to do something with my life,” Jakeirra said. “I just want to explore the world. I’d really like to go to New York.”

Hunt said she thinks some people never realize what they can accomplish because they never leave their hometown to figure that out.

While she does not have her plan fully worked out, Hunt said she knows her end game is to provide medical aid to soldiers.

The process to enlist in the United States Army begins soon, and Hunt said she is looking forward to the opportunity to travel and serve.

Although Hunt is set on joining the military, she said her mother is not exactly thrilled about the idea.

Her family, Hunt said, is what she will miss the most about Natchez, but the prospect of homesickness and hard work will not stop her from fulfilling her dream.

“I just want to go, I want the experience. My mama doesn’t wan’t me to go, but she says it’s my decision,” Hunt said.
