Mayor needs police chief she can trust

We recently complained about a lack of transparency in the Town of Ferriday.
Twice in the last three months Mayor Sherrie Jacobs has suspended the town’s police chief without much in the way of public explanation — until this week.
Jacobs opened up publicly this week on the matter, explaining in detail what her concerns with the police chief were.
Jacobs outlined a series of problems, which ultimately amount to insubordination in her mind.
The mayor says despite warnings, the police chief continued to spend money that the town could not afford.
“… He nearly bankrupted the town,” she said this week.
Regardless of the details, clearly at this point the town needs to resolve the matter that likely will require a new police chief. The mayor’s trust in the current chief has been damaged and rebuilding would take incredible amounts of time — if that trust can even be rebuilt.
The mayor and most of the aldermen have been at odds on this issue for some time, but ultimately, the mayor needs to be entrusted with the power to work with someone she feels best fits Ferriday’s needs as well as her own management style.
If that’s not the current chief, so be it.
Regardless of what happens next, we applaud Jacobs for making what would appear to be wise decisions regarding the suspensions and for opening up to the public and providing the details of what has transpired to date.
