Ferriday High School fell behind 18-10 at the end of the first quarter and never could recover as it fell to Red River 81-45 in the second round of LHSAA Class 2A girls playoff action.

Ferriday (18-10) was perhaps its own worse enemy for most of the night as it missed 20 free throws in addition to executing offensively.

“We committed too many penalties,” FHS coach Lisa Abron said. “I don’t know how many it was, but it was too many.”

Freshman Pacha Poole led the Lady Trojans in scoring with 16 points, while Shanique Hillard had 10. Hillard is just one of two seniors on the Ferriday roster.

“We really didn’t expect to get this far with them being so young,” Abron said. “We proved a lot of people wrong, and I’m proud of the way the girls played throughout the season.”

Oksonna Williams led Red River with 29.

Ferriday ends the year with an 18-10 mark a year after missing the playoffs altogether.

“A lot of them are already talking about what they need to get at for next year,” Abron said. “This is giving them motivation for next year.”

Gueydan 45, Delta Charter 28

GUEYDAN, La. — Kiaci Parker had 10 points and Kierra Neal had seven but it wasn’t enough as Delta Charter fell to Gueydan 45-28 in the second round of the LHSAA Class 1A girls playoffs.

Kiarra Charles had 17 for Gueydan.

Lady Storm (15-17) coach Ron Ellis said his squad is already eagerly looking forward to what next year brings.

“That’s a big loss, but we do have a nucleus,” Ellis said. “We’re going to be alright. We’re going to hit the gym and getting ready for next year.”
