WOODVILLE — Services for Phyllis Vasquez Geter, longtime resident of Wilkinson County, who died Saturday, Jan. 28, 2017, will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Woodville Baptist Church with the Rev. Warren Whitaker Jr. officiating.
Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Woodville under the direction of Newman Funeral Home in Woodville.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home and from 9 a.m. until service time Thursday at the church.
Mrs. Geter was born Aug. 23, 1923, in Separ, N.M., the daughter of Enrique and Hillary Vasquez of El Rancho, Cucumonga, Calif. She was the oldest of 14 brothers and sisters.
She was a graduate of Chaffey High School and attended University of California Los Angeles.
She and her husband, Gordon H. “Buddy” Geter were married May 25, 1946, in Yuma, Ariz.
In 1982, she was appointed as the successor to her husband, who served as Justice Court Judge of the 5th District of Wilkinson County and completed his term of office with a number of accomplishments.
Mrs. Geter was retired from William Carter Company in Centreville.
She was a member of Pioneer Baptist Church in the Buffalo community and later became a member of Woodville Baptist Church. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
Mrs. Geter was an accomplished seamstress, a lover of all genres of music and an avid reader. She was a faithful prayer warrior at her church for a number of years. She learned how to cook Southern cuisine and was known for her “crunchy” cornbread and her lemon pies.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
Survivors include three daughters and one son, Kathleen Ann Daly of Woodville, Ella Susan Rayburn of Florence and twins, Gordon Louis “Bubba” Geter of Natchez and Phyllis Leisa “Sissie” Boteler of Florence; seven sisters and brothers, Simona, Augustin, Alejo, Elisa, Michela, Jenny and Juan; 13 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be grandsons, Rod Simmons, Jonathan Gordon Simmons, Daniel Rayburn, Dell Rayburn, “Joey” Geter, Brandon Geter, Drew Boteler and Kyle Boteler.
