The Delta Charter School boys soccer team scored the first goal of Wednesday’s match against Rapides, but couldn’t keep the momentum going.

Rapides scored three goals in the first half and added three more in the second en route to a 6-1 win over the Storm.

“We started off the game very strong,” DCS coach Daniel Rivera said. “We were communicating, and the ball movement looked phenomenal. And it just seemed like on the defensive end, we were playing very timid.”

After jumping out to the early lead, Delta Charter (4-9-1) surrendered the advantage to two penalty kicks before eventually falling behind 3-1 at the half.

The Storm’s only score came off a scoring strike from Alden Cupit, with an assist from teammate Jacob Hawkins.

Delta Charter had its chances after Cupit’s score, but came up short on several occasions.

Perhaps its best opportunity was in the second half coming midway through the period after forward Carson Curtis’s shot was denied by the Rapides goalkeeper.

Despite allowing six goals, Delta Charter goalkeeper Freddie Mango turned in a solid effort, tallying nine saves.

Mango took over at goalie after starter Mike Brown suffered a season-ending injury earlier this year.

“Unfortunately, when we pull Freddie out of the defense, it makes us very slow,” Rivera said. “He’s just so fast, big kid and very strong. When we have a normal backline, we’re incredibly fast, which allows to play high up the field. And when we take him out, we can’t play as high, but the kids continue to play really high up the field. Out of the six goals, two were (penalty kicks) and three were breakaways to where we couldn’t get back.”

Rivera said despite the lopsided defeat, he thinks the final outcome wasn’t indicative of how tightly contested the game was played.

“Give credit to them (Rapides),” he said. “They talked, and toward the end of the game they moved the ball well. You could tell the confidence was building with them. I feel like on another day, this wouldn’t be the score.”

Delta Charter will next be in action Saturday when it faces Holy St. Menard.

“That will be the toughest opponent of the season,” Rivera said.
