NATCHEZ — With National School Choice Week beginning today, the Natchez-Adams County Chamber of Commerce’s education committee will host an event Tuesday to spotlight the educational options in the community.
Chamber President and CEO Debbie Hudson said all Natchez-Adams County K-12 schools — Adams County Christian School, Cathedral School, Natchez-Adams Schools and Trinity Episcopal School — would be participating. Copiah-Lincoln Community College will also be present, as will other programs with an educational component, such as the Grand Village of the Natchez Indians.
“We are kind of making a statement, ‘Look how fortunate we are,” Hudson said. “We have preschool options, we have public and private schools, and we have a college (Alcorn State University) and a community college in our community.
“Not every community is this fortunate. We are lucky to have all of these choices.”
Hudson said she wants the community to be as informed as possible, so parents can make the best educational decisions for their children.
“No one school is good for everyone, but it’s great we have so many choices,” she said. “We would like everyone in the community to come out.”
Natchez-Adams School District Public Relations Coordinator Steven Richardson said the district would show off the benefits of the district’s academy model, the early college options and other aspects of the district.
“Each school offers a special set of classes that reflects a student’s interests,” Richardson said. “Whether that is a career interest, or whether that is a talent-based interest, each school has a curriculum of required courses and special classes that respond to the interests of the students.
“Please come out and learn about all the district has to offer.”
Trinity Head of School Christina Ferrell Daugherty said an emphasis would be placed on the school’s focus on math and science.
“We have prepared a table where we are going to have hands-on science experiments,” Daugherty said. “But we will have representatives from all aspects of our school to answer any questions anyone may have.
“We are looking forward to it. I believe this is the first time this is being done in the community, and we are hoping for a large turnout to show what Trinity is all about.”
The event will be Tuesday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Natchez Convention Center.
