VIDALIA — A man was arrested Sunday for reportedly tossing a bag containing cocaine, methamphetamine and other drugs and contraband over a fence onto the property of the Concordia Parish Work Release Facility.

Concordia Parish Sheriff’s Office spokesman Vernon Stevens said Curtis Washington, 36, 303 Back Project Road, Schriever, La., reportedly threw a bag of cocaine, methamphetamine, Suboxone, marijuana, tobacco and two cell phones over the fence.

Stevens said deputies received a call at approximately 7:30 p.m. Sunday from the work-release facility, located on U.S. 84, regarding someone being seen throwing contraband over the fence.

When deputies arrived, Stevens said, they reportedly noticed a vehicle parked on the levee behind the work-release facility. The deputies questioned the driver of the vehicle and found that he had no driver’s license.

During questioning, Stevens said, the driver allegedly admitted to throwing a bag over the fence into the yard of the facility, but reportedly told deputies the bag contained only tobacco.

When deputies retrieved the bag from the work-release facility, they reportedly discovered it contained the drugs and contraband, Stevens said.

Stevens said CPSO has not determined for whom the drugs and contraband were intended.

Washington and a woman who was a passenger in the vehicle were detained and taken to the Concordia Parish Sheriff’s Office for questioning.

Based on witness statements and the contraband recovered at the scene, Stevens said, Washington was charged with introduction of contraband into a penal institute, possession of schedule I drugs with intent to distribute, possession of schedule II drugs with intent to distribute, possession of schedule III drugs with intent to distribute and was also being held on a warrant from another law enforcement agency.

The passenger was not charged.

CPSO Chief Deputy David Hedrick commended the deputies for their work.

“I want to thank our deputies for their good work in this case,” Hedrick said. “The use of illegal drugs is an ongoing problem, and we will remain vigilant in our efforts to stop the manufacture, transportation and distribution of illegal drugs in Concordia Parish.”
