MONTICELLO — Shelby Mitchell and Daphne Armstrong each came through with three hits to lead Lawrence County’s offense as the Lady Cougars defeated the Franklin County Lady Bulldogs 16-8 Friday night.

Armstrong went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate and Mitchell was 3-for-5 as Lawrence County ended up with 15 hits in the game. The Lady Cougars also used a couple of big innings to make sure the Lady Bulldogs were not able to get back in the game.

But here’s the odd statistic from this game. The two teams combined for 29 hits —but only three of them went for extra bases. And two of those belonged to Franklin County as KeKe Collins hit a home run and Allison Hauer had a double.

Franklin County scored one run in the top of the first inning, but Lawrence County took the lead for good with two runs in the bottom of the first and then scored five runs in the bottom of the second to take a 7-1 lead.

The Lady Bulldogs scored three times in the top of the third inning to cut Lady Cougars’ lead in half from six runs to three, but the home team answered with six runs in the bottom of the fourth for a 13-4 advantage — too big of a hole for the Lady Bulldogs.

Hauer ended up going 2-for-4 while Collins was 2-for-3 and S. Middleton went 3-for-4 as Franklin County (5-4-2) would wind up with 14 hits.

Jullian Johns wound up being the winning pitcher while Rachel Dier was charged with the loss.

Franklin County plays host to its own tournament today with action getting under way at 9:30 a.m.

Simpson 15, Monterey 13 (12 innings)

OLLA, La. — Most of the time when Monterey scores 12 runs in the first three innings, the game is pretty much over with. That would not be the case on Friday afternoon against Simpson at the LaSalle Tournament.

The Lady Broncos managed to hang in there despite the Lady Wolves’ offensive assault and ended up taking the game into extra innings before finally scoring twice in the top of the 12th inning for an amazing come-from-behind victory.

After Simpson jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead, Monterey scored six times in the bottom of the first inning for its first lead of the game. However, the Lady Broncos scored four times for the second straight inning and led 8-7 after two innings of play.

Then Monterey retook the lead at 12-9 thanks to a five-run rally in the bottom of the third inning. But for some reason, the Lady Wolves’ offensive production went cold after that.

And eventually, the Lady Broncos would take advantage. They scored four runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a 13-2 lead. The Lady Wolves scored one run in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game up at 13-13.

After five consecutive scoreless innings, Simpson broke through with two runs in the top of the fifth and M. Kelly, who started and ended the game for the Lady Broncos, pitched a scoreless bottom of the 12th to finally put an end to a game that went three and a half hours.

Kelly went 2-for-7 with a double, A. Veritt was 3-for-6 with a double and one run batted in, and Elzey went 3-for-7 with a double to lead Simpson, which had 18 hits in the game.

Monterey (15-5) was led by Bailey New, who went 3-for-6 with a double and two RBIs, and Kennedy Poole, who was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.

The Lady Wolves play two games today at the LaSalle Tournament. First they will take on Bastrop at 11 a.m. and then they go up against LaSalle at 1 p.m.
