NATCHEZ — Immediately following his team’s 44-14 win over Wilkinson County on Friday, Natchez High School head coach Lance Reed said he didn’t think his team played a complete game.

After taking a day to reflect upon it, however, Reed said Saturday that he might have second thoughts about those comments.

“At the time, during the game, we thought we didn’t do some things very well,” Reed said. “After watching the film, we feel we actually did better in some things than we did the week before.

“There are still some things we want to improve on. This kicking game is an issue that could really bite us if we don’t improve (there).”

Natchez had a 25-0 lead at halftime on Friday before scoring 19 points in the second half.

“Defensively, I thought we improved in our pursuit of the football,” Reed said. “We want to improve on that each week. With the running game, I thought Joel Davis ran the ball well.”

Davis finished the game Friday with 142 yards on 22 carries.

Reed said his definition of a complete game is one in which each phase of the game is executed the way you’re supposed to.

“If we have one failure in one area, that could cause us to lose a game,” Reed said.

Reed was not the only local coach disappointed in his team despite a win on Friday. Trinity Episcopal coach David King said he felt his team didn’t keep the intensity level consistent the whole game.

Trinity defeated East Rankin 25-16, but all 25 points came in the first half.

“I think our kids got up three scores and stopped competing at a high level,” King said. “You want to compete every drive, and we didn’t. That concerned me.”

King’s concern was so great that he called an afternoon practice on Saturday to address it.

“I challenged them (Friday) night after we watched film,” King said. “We showed up for about an hour and a half (on Saturday) to get (our) thoughts together.

“They responded well, I thought. I feel like they got the point that you need to forget about the scoreboard and just go out there and compete.”

Adams County Christian School lost to Hillcrest Christian 28-12 on Friday, a game that saw the Rebels turn the ball over seven times.

After taking an early 6-0 lead, the Rebels wouldn’t score again until the fourth quarter. Hillcrest, meanwhile, scored 7 points in the first quarter and went on to score 21 more.

Cathedral School was shut out in its opening game against Loyd Star 27-0. Loyd Star jumped out to an early 12-0 lead in the first quarter.

Neither team scored in the second quarter, but Loyd Star reached the end zone at the start of the third quarter and again in the fourth.

Cathedral (0-1) will have an off week this week and will travel to Enterprise High School Sept. 11.
