NATCHEZ — A Natchez man was behind bars Friday after reportedly confessing to shooting another man who refused to give him a ride.
Natchez Police Sgt. Jerry Ford said Merit Health Natchez reported a patient who had been grazed in the chest by a bullet was being treated at the hospital shortly before 2 p.m.
The victim reported to police that Derrick Carter, 30, an acquaintance, asked him for a ride on Watts Avenue. When the victim refused, Carter reportedly pulled out a gun and fired multiple times at him.
After a bullet grazed the victim across the chest, the victim attempted to get in his car and flee, and Carter reportedly fired more shots at him, Ford said. Carter reportedly fired approximately four shots total.
Ford said the victim suffered lacerations to the chest and would likely be treated and released from the hospital Friday.
Officers were able to apprehend Carter on Ram Circle shortly after interviewing the victim at the hospital.
Carter reportedly confessed to shooting the victim at the Natchez Police Department. He was charged with aggravated assault — manifesting extreme indifference to human life.
Carter remained in the Natchez City Jail Friday evening without a bond.
