If Oscar Seyfarth were able to look out over the Natchez National Cemetery last Saturday, he might have snapped to attention and saluted a job well done.

The late Seyfarth, a veteran and an ardent local supporter of veterans’ causes, was one of the early organizers of the Wreaths Across America Day celebrations in Natchez.

Seyfarth, a retired master sergeant with the U.S. Air Force, served two tours of duty in Vietnam and helped create the local wreaths event when he saw a need in the community — remembering the memory of veterans during the emotional holiday season.

Thirteen years ago local group began honoring the memory of fallen soldiers with seven ceremonial wreaths.

The event has grown significantly. Last year more than 1,500 small balsam pine wreaths were placed on grave markers at the Natchez National Cemetery.

The small, stately wreaths are simple reminders that we care. Veterans devote a portion of their lives for all of us. They put their lives on the line each day, working to protect and defend our country.

The very least we can do is say, “thank you,” for their sacrifice and perhaps say a prayer of thanks for their service.
