NATCHEZ — With significant rainfall in the area over the past two days, Adams County’s burn ban could be lifted as soon as Monday.
Adams County Emergency Management Director Robert Bradford said the Adams County Board of Supervisors would review the status of the burn ban at the board’s Monday meeting.
Bradford said approximately 1 inch to 1.5 inches of rain has fallen over the past two days, and more rain is expected this weekend.
The rain has provided some relief to the drought affecting the area and region. The rainfall would likely be enough to lift the ban, Bradford said.
Bradford said the county would seek permission to lift the ban from the Mississippi Forestry Commission.
Burn bans are normally requested by the county board of supervisors and approved by the Mississippi Forestry Commission.
The county originally instituted a burn ban on Oct. 10.
On Oct. 11, Gov. Phil Bryant issued a partial state-level burn ban that included 52 counties, including Adams. The local ban must be lifted at a state level.
Bradford said residents should remember that despite the rain, the county is still currently under a burn ban.
Wildfires have been a concern in recent months throughout the Southeast. A Montgomery County man was killed in October while trying to extinguish a wildfire and at least seven people dead in wildfires this week in Tennessee.
