Adams County Christian School demonstrated poise and composure, they dazzled with spectacular plays both offensively and defensively, but ultimately the Rebels fell short to Copiah Academy 3-2 Wednesday in boys soccer action.

A miskick from the Colonels in the second half that sliced perfectly into the lower corner of the net proved to be the difference as Copiah earned a hard-fought road win.

“For my guys to be in it 2-2 at halftime, I could not be prouder as a coach,” ACCS coach Jim Bob Allgood said. “That’s one of the things you have to strive for against these Jackson (area) teams and have a chance and an opportunity.”

Copiah took one-point leads on two seperate occasions in the first half, but each time the Rebels (0-1) responded with a goal of their own.

Cristofer Thompson got the Rebels on the board after knocking the ball free from the Copiah keeper and burying a shot into the back of the net.

After Copiah jumped back ahead 2-1, the Rebels responded with a highlight-reel scoring play. Senior Matt Westmoreland’s throw-in from the sideline sailed perfectly into the box, and Kyle Williams headed the ball into the back of the net for the tie.

“(Westmoreland) is one of the best in the business (at throw-ins),” Allgood said. “I love the opportunities that he gives us for us to score in the top of the box.

Minutes later, Alex McCready kept the score locked at 2-2 after the lanky keeper lunged to his right to keep out a penalty kick, and pushed momentum squarely on the Rebels side heading to halftime.

“He stopped a magnificent shot,” Allgood said. “He dove correctly, and that kept us in this contest.”

ACCS will attempt to notch its first win Monday when it hosts cross-town rival Cathedral High School.

“I’m very proud of all them,” Allgood said. “In order to get better, we have to talk and communicate where we’re going with the ball. When we learn that chemistry, this team is going to be very good.”
