WOODVILLE — After two blowout victories to start the season, Wilkinson County Christian Rams coach Sam Byrd says his team will need to show improvement on defense if they want to improve to 3-0.

The Rams take on a CENLA Christian team that is 0-2, but has an explosive offense that scored 34 points last week in a 50-34 loss to Riverfield.

“We’re still trying to improve our defense,” Byrd said. “We haven’t been prepared to start the game defensively, and we’ve got to improve that.”

WCCA won its first game 40-6 over Christian Home Educator’s Foundation and then defeated Ben’s Ford Christian 46-6 last Friday night.

The Rams scored 34 points in the first quarter against Ben’s Ford before cruising in the final three quarters.

But Byrd is expecting a much tougher game this Friday when the Rams travel to Pineville, La., to take on the Lions.

Byrd said that despite CENLA’s 0-2 record, the Lions are a dangerous opponent that the Rams can’t overlook.

“CENLA has improved a lot,” Byrd said. “They led at halftime of both of their games but ran out of steam in the second half because their opponents had more (players). They have a lot of offensive weapons and do a lot of passing out of a spread offense.”

CENLA lost its opening game 41-18 to Adams County Christian after having an 18-13 halftime lead, and lost last Friday’s offensive shootout to Riverfield, despite leading at halftime once again.

Lions quarterback Chance Terrell was spectacular in CENLA’s loss to Riverfield, completing 18-of-30 passes for 264 yards and three touchdowns.

Byrd said WCCA’s defense will have its work cut out for it adapting to the multiple formations CENLA operates out of.

“They use multiple formations and will throw some crazy ones at you,” Byrd said. “We’ve got to have our people in the right places for whatever their offense throws at us. CENLA is a very dangerous opponent hungry for a win.”
