Holidays herald more good news

As we settle back into a regular work routine after several days of celebrating Thanksgiving and looking forward to Christmas, let us look at some highlights from this past week.
- The intersection of Main and Commerce streets in Natchez were packed with revelers Friday evening as city kicked off the Christmas season with Santa Claus, games, gumbo and the traditional lighting of the Christmas tree. Children reached out to capture the fake snow drifting through the air and shouted with excitement as fireworks danced in front of the tree. Thanks to a group of committed organizers, the annual Christmas tree lighting and many other Christmas in Natchez events continue to grow in popularity. While the holiday events have the potential to draw tourists to Natchez, many of the holiday events such as Friday’s kickoff also bring the community together for a citywide celebration. Thanks to everyone in Natchez who made Friday afternoon special.
- Volunteers filled the Natchez Stewpot Thursday afternoon to serve up nearly 400 plates of turkey, dressing and many other traditional Thanksgiving dishes. When many residents were watching parades or getting ready to celebrate the holiday with family and friends, nearly 20 residents put their holiday on hold to help those who are unable to enjoy a simple meal each day. Thanks to all of the people who make sure others can get a taste of the things many of us take for granted.
- Congratulations to the Natchez-Adams County Humane Society for reaching an important milestone. The organization recently transported its 3,000 pet. For an area of the country that has an overabundance of dogs and cats in need of good homes, the transport program, started four years ago, sends animals to areas of the country with high demands for pets. Thanks to NACHS for looking for creative alternatives to our pet population problems.
As we look toward a week of blue skies and beautiful weather, let us remember to give thanks to everyone who is striving to make our community great.
