NATCHEZ — Nearly 300 job seekers put their names in front of 30 employers at Tuesday’s regional job fair at the Natchez Mall.
Hosted by Alcorn State University, Natchez Inc., WIN Job Center, Concordia Economic Development and Louisiana Works, the job fair gave area residents the opportunity to submit applications to local companies, including Delta Energy, Adams County Correctional Center, French America Line and local health care providers.
Regional temporary employment agencies from Louisiana were also represented at the fair Tuesday, Alcorn State University’s Special Assistant to the President, Ruth Nichols said.
She said the companies represented at the event were very pleased with the turnout.
“Almost every company that brought applications had to go back to their offices to get more,” Nichols said.
Compared to the job fair in May, employers were especially pleased with the professionalism demonstrated by most applicants.
“People who came were well dressed and brought resumes,” Nichols said. “It was a big difference from May.”
Nichols said applicants were also very engaged and interested in doing whatever training it took to secure a job.
“That is definitely a good sign for the area,” Nichols said.
Nichols said while she is not sure how many positions were available at the job fair, WIN Job Center currently has more than 200 regional jobs available.
During the fair, approximately 80 people signed up for the WorkKeys assessment, Nichols said. The assessment offers certifications for applicants to provide employers to demonstrate their skills and abilities.
Nichols said most companies said they found what they were looking for.
“Not every applicant will be hired,” Nichols said. “But if just a small percentage find work then it will have been so worth it.”
