Trailing 14-8 and entering the second half of the fifth- and sixth-grade AYA Super Bowl, the Green Extreme needed a spark.

It found it in its defense.

The Green Extreme forced four straight turnovers defensively, to flip the script and beat the Hurricanes 36-14 Tuesday under the lights at Adams County Christian School.

“They kind of came in down at halftime, and I told them we have a whole second half to play,” Green Extreme coach Will Mabry said.

Kaden Batieste started the second-half surge after he stripped the Hurricanes’ ball-carrier on the first play and raced 31 yards the other way for the score.

“That kind of changed the momentum for us,” Mabry said. “That’s something we work in practice — one guy stands him up (the ball-carrier), and the other guy strips the ball. It’s a game of possessions, so the more opportunities you have the chance to win.”

An interception and a fumble recovery then led two consecutive scoring runs, both by running back Rives Reynolds. Reynolds dashed around the right end for a long 36-yard score before plowing in from 3 yards out, giving his team a 30-14 advantage. Reynolds finished the game 128 yards rushing and three scores.

The Green Extreme then capped the second-half scoring barrage with a 42-yard interception return for a score by Justin Hawkins.

“It’s a good experience,” Mabry said. “These guys are real proud; that’s all they talk about is getting to the Super Bowl.”

Batieste finished the game with 56 yards rushing, while Tanner Wimberly and Jake Hairston each had touchdown runs for the Hurricanes.

The Hurricanes outgained the Green Extreme for the game 182-180.

Hurricanes 36, Regulators 18

Fred Lane and Landon French combined to score five touchdowns to help lift the Hurricanes past the Regulators 36-18 in the third- and fourth-grade AYA Super Bowl Tuesday at ACCS.

“We had so many really good athletes and smart kids, that we were calling plays from the sideline, so we tried it like high-school style from the sideline,” Hurricanes coach Buck Brumfield said. “I’ve got to give all the kids credit, they did wonderful.”

Lane hauled in a 32-receiving touchdown from French and added a 70-yard scamper down the sideline on the final play of the first half.

French scored the game’s first score after hauling in a 17-yard strike from Bodi Brumfield, and added scoring runs of 67 and 23 yards in the second half, with the former coming on the second play from scrimmage in the third quarter.

“This is huge for us,” Brumfield said. “We had three teams

from Cathedral, so there was always smack talk at school. They’re all friends at the end of the day.”

Brian Burgess scored two touchdowns for the Regulators, plunging in from 2-yards for his team’s first score, then hauling in a long 70-yard strike from Crews Marchbanks.

Running back Traylon Cusic added a 70-yard scoring run down the sideline for the Regulators.

The Hurricanes led at halftime 15-6 before scoring three second-half scores.

Merit Health 20,
Adkins Lumber 12

A goal-line stand gave Merit Health a 20-12 win the AYA flag-football Super Bowl.

DeMarcus Mitchell put his team ahead in overtime with a long touchdown catch, then Merit Health clamped down defensively to keep Adkins Lumber out of the end zone and preserve the win.
