Adams County extends burn ban

NATCHEZ — Adams County has extended its current burn ban until Nov. 30.
Adams County Emergency Management Director Robert Bradford said Monday that because no significant rainfall has occurred in the area in weeks, the ban on burning would continue through November.
The county originally instituted a burn ban on Oct. 10 for the remainder of October.
“We would need two to three inches of continuous rain to allow the ground to saturate enough to really be ready to lift the burn ban,” Bradford said.
Open fire pits were previously permitted under the burn, but are now prohibited, Bradford said. Outdoor charcoal grills are still allowed.
Approximately 62 counties across the state remain under burn bans as the region continues to experience extreme drought conditions.
A Montgomery County man was killed last week while trying to extinguish a wildfire.
The Mississippi Forestry Commission said the private landowner was burning an agricultural field during a burn ban when the fire spread quickly and overtook the man during his attempts to put out the fire.
“We just don’t want anything like that to happen in our county,” Bradford said. “We want to keep our first responders safe and also the residents safe.”
