High School football teams across the Miss-Lou took center stage Friday night, but on Saturday youth baseball teams stole the spotlight.
Twenty-one youth baseball teams demonstrated their abilities at the Concordia Recreation Center, with age groups ranging from 9U teams to 14U teams.
“Teams came from Lafayette, Alexandria, Brookhaven, pretty much all over within a 150-mile radius,” tournament director Shaun McDonald said. “We generally try to have 20-25 for this tournament, and there are some very good teams.”
One of those strong squads is McDonald’s 14U Voo Doo Black team, who is ranked No. 2 in the state, McDonald said.
The Voo Doo won both of its games Saturday, winning 5-0 in the opener over the Double Play Bandits and 15-2 in its second game.
“Our pitching was very good today, but we also hit the ball,” McDonald said. “I felt like we came out aggressive.”
The Voo Doo sure did. On the very first pitch of its opening-game win, pitcher/outfielder Peyton Fort launched a solo home run well over the left-field wall.
Championship games will be played throughout the day at the complex today.
“A team to watch is the 10U Havoc, and the name says it all,” McDonald said. “They run-ruled both their games today.”
