TYLERTOWN — With it being Cathedral School’s first district game, the Lady Green Wave were looking to make a statement.

And behind solid pitching and defense, Cathedral defeated Salem High School 5-3 to improve to 11-5 overall on the season.

Starter Mollie Devening went all five innings for Cathedral, giving up three runs, none earned, on five hits and three strikeouts. The game was called after five innings due to inclement weather.

“We came out ready to play,” Cathedral head coach Gary Blackwell said. “The girls were in a good mood and scored those two runs in the first inning, which got us going.”

Devening pitched in her first game back from a strained leg muscle, and Blackwell said she did well considering she hadn’t pitched for several games.

“She battled and hung in there, and we were able to hold them off. She didn’t give up any earned runs, so that one error really hurt us, but we only had that one, so we were playing good defense (overall).”

Cathedral will play at Loyd Star Thursday.

Monterey 14, Harrisonburg 4

HARRISONBURG — Ellen Bairnsfather went five strong innings for Monterey as it pounded Harrisonburg Tuesday.

Bairnsfather struck out six, gave up six hits and walked just one batter. Monterey’s offense, meanwhile, scored in all five innings, triggering the 10-run mercy rule after five.

Karlee Woodruff, Paige Bryan and Sarah Sims all doubled for Monterey. Woodruff also had a home run.

Monterey improved to 15-3 on the year, 5-1 in district play. It will travel to Glenmora Thursday.
