The Delta Charter School Storm picked up its second win of the season after defeating the Sicily Island High School Tigers 15-6 Friday night in an LHSAA District 2-1A game.
“A win’s a win,” Delta Charter head coach Zach Rogel said. “It was a sloppy game. We didn’t play our cleanest game. It was a hard-fought game. Close score throughout the game.”
Both teams had plenty of scoring opportunities, especially when they got in the red zone. But each team’s defense kept stepping up and kept the opposing offense out of the end zone. Sicily Island head coach Curtis Shavers said his team left far too many points on the field.
“A lot of missed opportunities. We didn’t capitalize on our opportunities,” Shavers said. “Give DC credit for pulling out a victory.”
Even though the Tigers had 23 first downs, the Storm’s defense held them to just 204 yards of total offense. Tyreke Tolliver threw for just 24 yards on 3-for-11 passing with one interception and had 90 yards rushing on 10 carries.
And that proved to be beneficial because Delta Charter turned the ball over three times themselves.
Sicily Island scored first on a Courtney Boatner touchdown run in the first quarter. Delta Charter responded with a touchdown and a field goal in the second quarter to take a 9-6 lead into halftime. The Storm scored again in the third quarter.
“It was a well-played game,” Shavers said.
Delta Charter (2-6, 1-4) hosts Delhi High School Friday at 7 p.m. Sicily Island (0-7, 0-5) plays at Beekman Charter at 7 p.m. Friday.
