Wilkinson County Christian coach Chris McGraw said there is more on the line than just a district title when his team travels today to face Trinity Episcopal in both team’s regular-season finale.

Due to the MAIS’ power-points system, the Rams (7-1) could finish as high as No. 2 in the MAIS AA ranks while a loss could have them fall to as lose as No. 2, McGraw said.

“We’re very excited for this game,” McGraw said. “The kids have worked hard this week and understand what’s on the line.”
Trinity coach Graham Roberts said while the Saints (4-5) perhaps may have not reached the number of wins he had hoped, the first-year coach remains excited for the opportunity ahead of his team.

“We’re fired up, and the kids are getting ready,” he said. “We had greater expectations for our season, but to have the opportunity to finish with a district championship is something we’re all excited about.”

McGraw said there is a lot that concerns him offensively from Trinity, particularly its quarterback and University of Southern Mississippi commit Kevontaye Caston.

“He’s probably the fastest kid we’ve seen,” McGraw said. “But they have tons of athletes all over the field.”
Roberts said he is equally impressed with the Rams, highlighting the season-long play of do-it-all athlete Caleb Poole.

“He’s a hard-nosed kid that sees the field well,” Roberts said. “You have to give credit to Coach McGraw, he does a great job of coaching those guys, and they play hard for him.”

The Saints enter tonight’s district 5-AA showdown fresh off perhaps their best showing of the year. Trinity beat Glenbrook Academy last Friday, 41-6.

“Playing together is a key for us,” Roberts said. “We finally one together last Friday, and we beat a very good tea, and that was the difference for us. We put four quarters together of playing together as a team.”

McGraw said the key for his squad is to do what it’s done best all season long in establish is potent rushing attack.

“We have to keep the ball away from them,” he said. “You’re not going to stop them; they’re too fast and too explosive … We’re not going to throw it a lot, we ran it straight at them last year. That’s what we do. Everybody across the state knows that. We’re going to run the ball, and I’ve got a quite a lot of guys that can run the ball.”

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
