Include landmarks: Give your photos a sense of place by including familiar landmarks, whether it is the Mississippi River like this photo taken by Sam Gause or St. Mary Basilica or any of the other beautiful sights in the Miss-Lou.

Don’t just look up: While it is tempting to keep the camera focused on the skies, sometimes the best photos are found looking down or around. Classic photos do not necessarily have to include balloons. Always be on the lookout for expression and emotions that capture the spirit of the balloon race.

Focus on the family: Try to put familiar faces in your photos. In years to come, the look of awe on a child’s face, the picture of a family having fun together will have the most impact. Watch your children and grandchildren grow up  at the Great Mississippi River Balloon Race.

Have fun. Experiment: Sometimes the most memorable photos come from the most unexpected places. Look for the unusual and try, try, try. With digital cameras the only thing that is being wasted is battery power. And remember, if you are having fun, it will show through in your photos.

Light it up: Don’t forget the balloon glow. Use reflections on the water to your advantage. Silhouette people in front of the balloons when they are glowing for an interesting effect.
