NATCHEZ — Cathedral High School’s Marty Lewis said being named an MAIS fast-pitch all-star was a “special” accomplishment.
The Lady Greenwave senior will be joined Wednesday by fellow Cathedral standout Elizabeth Smith as well as to Adams County Christian School seniors Bailey Boyd and Anna McDaniel as the quartet get set to test their skills against the league’s best at the annual all-star game.
“It’s big to get named an all-star,” Boyd said. “I honestly didn’t expect it.”
McDaniel said when first-year ACCS coach Tate Lipscomb gave her and Boyd the good news, the duo were filled with emotion.
“It was exciting,” McDaniel said. “Bailey and I hugged each other, and it’s really cool with it being our last year. We’re looking forward to it.”
Smith said she is most looking forward to is the competition and being able to showcase her talents among the league’s top players.
“I know the players are going to be good,” she said. “But it’s an honor. It means I’ve been noticed by different people that think I’m good enough to play at an all-star game.”
Boyd said she had been eyeing the prestigious honor for a long time.
“I’ve been pretty much wanting that spot all my playing career,” she said. “I’m nervous, but it’s big to get recognized.”
The softball showcase caps off what has been a memorable season for all four players is they helped their respective squads make deep runs in the MAIS playoffs.
Both squads finished in the top 4 at the MAIS AAA South State tournament, qualifying them for the state tournament the following week.
Lewis played a significant role in her team’s advancement at South State as the senior smacked a game-tying double in a 6-5 win over Centreville Academy.
The double served as a memorable hit for Lewis as she has been battling leg ailments all season long, and is scheduled for knee surgery Thursday.
“(The season) has been a little tough coming off my knee surgery (in May) — Elizabeth has had to pitch most of the games,” Lewis said. “That was kind of tough.”
Cathedral went 1-2 at the state tournament, including a 3-2 win over North Delta during which Lewis tossed a complete game. Smith recorded at least one hit in all three of the games.
ACCS, meanwhile, managed to record a fourth-place finish at the tournament. McDaniel launched a solo home run in her team’s 6-1 win over North Delta, and Boyd laced a double. The lone seniors on the Lady Rebels’ roster helped guide their team to a fourth-place overall finish, an accomplishment Boyd said she would remember for a long time.
“This year was really big, especially having a new coach,” she said. “There was an adjustment period, but we caught up pretty quick, and we got further than we thought we ever would.”
The game will be played at Jackson Prep.
“To be the only two seniors on (Cathedral), and we both got it, that’s pretty special,” Lewis said.
