Trinity leans on do-it-all athlete, USM commit Caston

University of Southern Mississippi coach Jay Hopson didn’t waste any time to extend Trinity Episcopal standout Kevontaye Caston a scholarship offer in July.
The 6-foot, 175 pounder caught the eye of the first-year Golden Eagles coach on the summer circuit after registering a blistering 4.36 40-yard dash at a camp on the Hattiesburg campus.
The USM commit is now displaying that athletic ability on Friday nights, drawing the attention of coaches across MAIS, including his own.
“When I came on (in April), I didn’t know a whole lot about him,” Roberts said. “I saw some film on him, so I knew he was talented.”
The versatile athlete serves in a variety of roles for Trinity, lining up at wide receiver and quarterback in addition to safety on defense and kick returning duties.
“Kevontaye is very dynamic,” Roberts said. “We run two quarterbacks, and when he is in … he makes the offense work. He makes plays with his feet, and he extends plays with his legs.”
Caston has helped guide the Saints to a 3-4 mark this year, including a 2-0 record in district competition.
The Saints, however, are attempting to rebound from a tough loss last week at the hands of Cathedral High School, the first-ever meeting between the two Natchez-based school.
“I felt a lot of energy in that game,” Caston said. “It felt like we were in a real big game, and that’s how it felt like all week; like we were preparing to play a championship.”
While Caston said the Southern Miss scholarship offer is a “great opportunity” and he looks forward to what awaits him on the next level, the senior standout said his focus remains on final three regular-season games starting Friday against Centreville Academy.
“I think we’re getting better as a team,” Caston said. “We just need to keep playing hard throughout the whole game. I want to win the last couple of games and go to the playoffs, and we’ll take it from there.”
