Jefferson County using off week to regroup

FAYETTE — Jefferson County coach James Herrington said his team isn’t used to having an off week during the season, but he’s happy the Tigers were able to take advantage of one this year.
Jefferson County did not play last week after opening its season Aug. 21 with a 59-24 loss to Natchez High.
Herrington said the Tigers used the open week to work out some kinks and get some players healed up before their game against Port Gibson tonight.
“Normally we don’t have an opening, but it came in handy because we had the opportunity to get some people well and work on our personnel packages more,” Herrington said. “We needed some time to fine tune some things.”
Herrington wasn’t pleased with the way Natchez moved the ball on the ground, especially quarterback Javon Washington, who rushed for 183 yards and five touchdowns on 13 carries.
“We didn’t play physical enough against Natchez,” Herrington said. “We let their quarterback do a lot of running around and didn’t hit him. And he was a quarterback, not a running back.”
One of those things Herrington said the Tigers needed to work on was aggressiveness on both offense and defense.
“One of the things we worked on was suring up our tackling and being more aggressive on both sides of the ball, blocking and tackling,” Herrington said. “Not so much scheme wise but being more aggressive at the point of attack.”
Port Gibson is 1-1 on the season. The Blue Waves won their season opener over Raymond 16-6 before losing to Hinds AHS 15-13 last week.
Herrington said the Tigers must look out for Port Gibson’s speed.
“Basically overall they’re a fast team,” Herrington said. “They’re not a big team, but fast. They like to go into power formation and run the ball. (Quarterback Joshua Dotson) is one of the better athletes they have. We’ve got to focus on taking him out of the game.”
And on offense, the Tigers plan to feature their three big weapons, Terry and Kiwaski Tenner and Davian Noble.
“Offensively, we’ve got to come out with the TNT package,” Herrington said. “Tenner, Noble and Tenner. If we can get those guys going off, we should have a good night.”
