NATCHEZ — The City of Natchez is accepting applications for director of tourism and the Convention and Visitors Bureau.
Applications are due to the city’s personnel office by Oct. 14.
The board of aldermen charged Interim Tourism Director Jennifer Ogden Combs, Natchez National Historical Park Superintendent Kathleen Bond and Historic Natchez Foundation Executive Director Mimi Miller with drafting the job description for the position.
The director will take the position left vacant after former director Kevin Kirby was terminated in April following ongoing personnel issues at the CVB. The board of aldermen also asked for the resignations of the Natchez Convention Promotion Commission, which oversees the operations of the CVB.
The board is expected soon to announce new appointees to the commission. Candidates were interviewed earlier this month, and the aldermen postponed the decision at their last meeting.
The salary for the tourism director’s job is listed as being between $75,000 and $100,000, based on qualifications.
The job description states “the director of tourism for Natchez will help plan, implement, and coordinate the annual marketing plan and the day-to- day business operations of the Natchez Convention (and) Promotion Commission (doing business as the Natchez CVB), to serve as the public face of tourism for Natchez, and to oversee the maintenance and operation of the Natchez Visitor (Reception) Center. This city employee will work directly with a six-member NCPC board and will report on a regular basis to the mayor and Natchez Board of Aldermen.”
The responsibilities in the job description include planning and implementing the activities of the CVB in the areas of sales and marketing, advertising, social media, promotional efforts and materials; budgetary planning and management; oversight for city-owned tourism resources and facilities and other duties.
Education and experience requirements include a bachelor’s degree in tourism, marketing or a related field, experience in CVB marketing or similar hospitality-focused business and knowledge of personnel supervision, budget development and financial management.
Applications should be submitted to the city’s personnel officer, Brenda Cantu, at City Hall, 124 S. Pearl St., or electronically at personnel@natchez.ms.us.
Mayor Darryl Grennell said after the application period closes, the aldermen will likely assemble a search committee, as they did in the previous director search, to vet applicants and make a recommendation of two to three candidates for the board of aldermen to interview.
Grennell said he would likely be making recommendations for members of the search committee at Tuesday’s board of aldermen meeting.
“I plan to bring it up Tuesday, so that the search committee can get organized and develop instruments that will help create a fair process for candidates to be (evaluated),” Grennell said.
The timeline for hiring a director, Grennell said, will depend on how quickly candidates can be interviewed and vetted by the committee.
