NATCHEZ — Two men were charged Monday after one of them reportedly almost ran over an Adams County Sheriff’s Office deputy with a truck.
On Monday afternoon, the ACSO deputy reportedly observed a motorcycle parked on the side of Liberty Road, ran the vehicle identification number and discovered the motorcycle was reported stolen, ACSO spokeswoman Sgt. Cal Green said in a statement.
While waiting for a tow truck to pick up the motorcycle, a truck, reportedly driven by Russell Byron Hazlip, approached the deputy, who recognized the truck as one driven by John Joseph Barr during a previous arrest.
The deputy reportedly attempted to stop the truck and was nearly run over when the vehicle sped away.
While the deputy was chasing the truck, Barr, a passenger, reportedly jumped from the vehicle and ran into the woods.
Additional deputies arrived as backup, and the truck was located at a Liberty Road residence.
During an inventory of the vehicle, deputies reportedly found a radio reported stolen from ACSO in 2015 as well as other stolen items.
A search of Hazlip’s residence reportedly uncovered more stolen property as well as marijuana seeds, drug paraphernalia, a weapon and surveillance equipment.
Concordia Parish Sheriff’s Office assisted in the search for Barr with a K-9 officer. A resident reportedly spotted Barr coming out of a bayou in the area of Margaret Avenue and alerted ACSO.
Deputies arrested Barr as he reportedly got into a vehicle and attempted to leave the area.
Barr, 37, 352 N. Eastabuchie Road, Moselle, was arrested on outstanding warrants for burglary and possession of stolen property. He was being held in the Adams County Jail Tuesday night on a $60,000 bond.
Hazlip, 37, 3 Maplewood Lane, was charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, disorderly conduct and receiving stolen property. He was being held in the Adams County Jail Tuesday night on a $72,000 bond.
