CENTREVILLE — Madison Dawson went 3-for-3 with one RBI, one run scored and three stolen bases as the Centreville Academy Lady Tigers held on for a 4-3 win over the Central Private School Lady Rebels in the MAIS District 5-AAA finale.
Even though Centreville Academy finished 5-3 in district play, it ended up in third place in the district after losing a tiebreaker with Bowling Green School.
With the game tied at 2-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning, Dawson hit a lead-off single and scored on Karlyn Dalton’s double. Dalton was somehow not credited with an RBI as Dawson scored on the throw. Katie Lyn McDowell sacrificed Dalton to third base and Dalton scored on an RBI groundout by Alexis Evans for a 4-2 Centreville lead.
Rileigh Allen scattered three runs on eight hits and struck out three batters over seven innings to pick up the win.
Centreville Academy (7-10 overall) will take on the No. 2 seed out of District 4-AAA at a time to be determined Saturday in the first round of the Class AAA South State Playoffs.
Parklane 2, Cathedral 0
McCOMB — As the MAIS playoff picture begins to solidify, Cathedral High School tested its limits late in the season with a road game against AAAA Parklane Academy.
The Lady Greenwave fall to Parklane 2-0, just one third-inning blemish and a couple RBI away from earning a win.
“We just couldn’t get the big hit when we needed it,” head coach Gary Blackwell said. “We had opportunities for sure.”
Cathedral left seven runners on base. The game was scoreless until two unearned runs crossed the plate in the bottom of the third inning. Starting pitcher Marty Lewis combined with teammate Elizabeth Smith to pitch six innings, allowing no earned runs a tallying four strikeouts each.
Blackwell said with the playoffs looming imminently, it’s critical to be able to rely on a stout pitching staff.
“They both did their job tonight,” Blackwell said. “We held a very good Parklane team to two runs, but they did a fantastic job. Marty is getting really healthy right now.”
Cathedral (7-10-2) hosts Brookhaven Academy today to determine whether the Lady Greenwave are a No. 2 or No. 3 seed in the playoffs.
