MCCOMB — Parklane Academy junior running back had 32 carries for 125 yards and two touchdowns as the Class AAAA Pioneers defeated the Class AAA Cathedral Green Wave 28-13 Friday night.
“It was their homecoming game. They came out and played,” Cathedral head coach Chuck Darbonne said. “We had our chances, but we didn’t take advantage of them.”
After Parklane jumped out to an early 6-0 lead, the Green Wave could have tied the game, but the pass was dropped. The Pioneers scored again in the second quarter to go into halftime with a 14-0 lead.
Cathedral got on the board in the third quarter and could have scored again just minutes later.
“We came out in the second half and put together a drive. Then we forced a turnover. We came down trying to score again. We were inside their 20. That’s when the ball slipped out of Connor Mire’s hands as he tried to throw it,” Darbonne said. “We got wore down after that.”
Parklane recovered the ball and turned that takeaway into another touchdown and a 21-6 lead early in the fourth quarter.
Mire went 15-for-30 passing with one interception for 170 yards. But the Green Wave’s running game was held to 73 yards.
Cathedral (2-3) returns to district play at 7 p.m. Friday when it hosts Simpson Academy.
