Rogel, Delta Charter eye home opener

After opening its season with two consecutive road trips, the Delta Charter School football team will open its home slate tonight when it hosts Grant High School.
The game is meaningful for the Storm for a number of reasons. Delta Charter is playing in front of its home crowd for the first time since having been declared eligible for LHSAA postseason play.
The contest also marks the first home game for first-year coach Zach Rogel.
“We’re very excited,” Rogel said. “I hear great things about the support that we have, and I can already tell we have great support because we traveled very well. I’m excited, and our goal is to put a good product on the field.”
The first two contests proved mixed results for the Storm (1-1), beating Lake Charles College 14-6 in the opener before falling to Cedar Creek last week, 45-21.
“We let some guys break containment on the outside run,” Rogel said in regards to last week’s loss. “We weren’t sticking to our assignments.”
Delta Charter also had some breakdowns in coverage on their special teams, as Cedar Creek produced 21 points on point return scores.
“We did a pretty good job of blocking, but our gunners have to do a better job of fighting off blocks and staying in their lanes,” Rogel said.
Rogel said the LHSAA Class 4A Cougars (2-0) will present a formidable challenge.
Grant has outscored its opponents this season 84-30.
“They’re obviously well-coached and a well disciplined team,” Rogel said. “They also have a few playmakers.”
The first-year head coach thinks his squad is more than capable of demonstrating a strong performance against the higher-classified Cougars, and remains optimistic about his squad’s chances.
“We want to come out balanced and get the ball in our playmakers’ hands,” Rogel said. “We want to play fast, have a good performance and play with some excitement in the offensive end.”
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
