Sicily Island High School utilized a bye week to allow key playmakers to heal from injuries suffered in its week 1 loss to Vidalia High School.
Head coach Curtis Shavers said, for now, his quarterback Tyreke Tolliver is probable for Friday’s game against Arcadia, but one of the Tigers’ top receivers Devion Dunbar’s return is still questionable.
“We had extra time to get some key players to recover,” Shavers said. “That limited what we could do in practice. Three or four guys had ankle injuries. They weren’t able to practice last week.”
Sicily Island faces 1-1 Arcadia for their home opener. Shavers said he worked out some young players to solidify depth behind the injured upper classmen.
Sicily Island relied on its ground game against Vidalia, rushing for 137 yards compared to its 65 yards passing.
Shavers said the key to success against Arcadia will be stuffing its running game and making tackles in the backfield.
“We know that they’re pretty large on the line and they’re a power running team,” Shavers said. “We expect to use most of our speed to try to get through the holes. If we get past their linemen, we feel like we’re in good shape.”
