Wright may have been right to step down from school board

Natchez-Adams School Board Trustee Dr. Benny Wright may have just done the district a favor by offering to resign effective at the end of this month.
We appreciate Wright’s eight years of service on the board, however, Wright seems to be unable to let go of his disagreement over the ouster of former superintendent Frederick Hill.
Wright has complained about the poor direction of the district since Hill’s departure, complaints which are Wright’s personal opinions and ones to which he certainly has a right to hold dear.
Wright admits he feels he can no longer contribute to the board’s mission. The reason, he said, is because the three school board members who led the charge to terminate Hill’s contract outnumber Wright on the board. With a five-member board, three members who feel the same way about many issues can simply do as they please, Wright insinuates.
While we have seen no evidence of a conspiracy of sorts on the board to do as they please without regard to giving Wright an opportunity to speak his mind, he’s clearly in the minority of school officials who supported Hill despite the district losing a federal court case in which Hill was a central player.
We applaud Wright for choosing to step down if he truly feels he can no longer be effective. We only wish he had not taken jabs at the rest of the board and at interim superintendent Fred Butcher in the process. It was a low shot by someone who should know better.
Hopefully, Wright’s position on the board will be filled with someone who has a love for the district along with the wisdom and discernment to help guide the board to do what’s in the best interest of the children in the district.
